Liniile de cale ferata, ce se afla in administrarea sau gestiunea CNCF „CFR” SA, trebuie sa asigure in permanenta conditii de siguranta in circulatia trenurilor la vitezele stabilite. In vederea mentinerii liniilor de cale ferata in conditii optime de exploatare, sunt necesare executarea unor lucrari periodice de reparatie si intretinere, in cadrul carora operatiunile de profilare a prismei de piatra sparta, detin un rol deosebit de important. Rolul acestor lucrari este acela de a distribui uniform piatra sparta in lungul caii ferate si de a curata platforma si prinderile sinelor de surplusul de piatra sparta. Aceste lucrari se executa cu masini grele de cale complexe si specializate in profilarea prismei de piatra sparta in cale, pe linii curente si aparate de cale, un rol deosebit de important avindu-l masinile de profilat, de mare productivitate tip SSP 2005 SWR. Masinile de profilat SSP 2005 SWR, sunt masini destinate lucrarilor de profilare a prismei de balast a liniilor de cale ferata, asigurind transportul pietrei sparte din zonele cu surplus de balast in zonele cu deficit. Prin intermediul unei perii, din tuburi flexibile din cauciuc, piatra sparta aflata in surplus este antrenata catre benzile transportoare ale masinii si este distribuita pe partile laterale ale prismei sau stocata in buncar si descarcata in zonele cu deficit de piatra sparta. Totodata prin operatiunea de periere se urmareste eliminarea surplusului de piatra sparta de la nivelul traverselor, a prinderilor astfel incit sa se poata observa starea traverselor si a elementelor de prindere.
