Die Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (BfG) ist Bundesoberbehörde im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministeriums für Verkehr (BMV) mit Sitz in Koblenz. Als wissenschaftliches Institut des Bundes für Forschung auf den Gebieten Gewässerkunde, Wasserwirtschaft, Gewässerschutz sowie Ökologie berät sie Bundesministerien und deren nachgeordnete Dienststellen. Die BfG berät gleichermaßen die Behörden der Wasserstraßenund Schifffahrtsverwaltung (WSV) hinsichtlich der Planung, des Aus- und Neubaus sowie des Betriebes und der Unterhaltung der Bundeswasserstraßen (BWStr). Ergänzende Informationen sind auf der Internetseite http://www.bafg.de verfügbar. Im Auftrag von BMV und WSV erstellt die BfG auch Vorhersagemodelle und -systeme für die Binnenwasserstraßen, pflegt und entwickelt diese Systeme kontinuierlich weiter. Darüber hinaus erstellt und veröffentlicht die BfG operationell wie präoperationell Vorhersagen für ausgewählte Wasserstraßen. Die bestehenden sowie zukünftigen Vorhersagesysteme des Bundes für die Binnenwasserstraßen basieren auf der Software Delft-FEWS. Aktuell werden mit dem Delft-FEWS System bei der BfG Wasserstand- und Abflussvorhersagen für die Gebiete von Rhein, Donau, Elbe, Eder, Weser und Nord-Ostsee-Kanal erstellt. Hinzu kommen Eisvorhersagen für Mittelland- und Elbe-Seitenkanal sowie die Aufbereitung hydrometeorologischer Mess- und Vorhersagedaten für alle deutschen Flussgebiete inkl. ihrer ausländischen Anteile.
