El Servicio de Líquidos Criogénicos (SLC) del SAI de la Universidad de Zaragoza tiene como función esencial la producción y suministro de helio líquido ultrapuro a la comunidad investigadora de la institución y a organismos públicos de investigación externos. Este servicio es transversal y crítico para la actividad científica de la Universidad, ya que da soporte a más de 130 proyectos de investigación anuales en áreas estratégicas como las tecnologías cuánticas, la nanociencia, la resonancia magnética nuclear y la caracterización de materiales avanzados. La infraestructura actual de licuefacción y purificación del SLC está formada por prototipos precomerciales desarrollados en el propio servicio entre 2006 y 2015, que han superado su vida útil prevista. De los cinco licuefactores, solo dos siguen operativos, y de los tres purificadores, únicamente uno. Los equipos no disponen de soporte técnico externo y sus compresores acumulan más de 70.000 horas de uso, superando las 60.000 horas recomendadas por los fabricantes para su sustitución. En estas condiciones, la continuidad del suministro de helio líquido no puede garantizarse a medio plazo, lo que afectaría tanto a los grupos de investigación usuarios como a otros servicios que dependen de él, como el Servicio de Medidas Físicas del SAI, el Servicio de RMN del CEQMA o el Laboratorio de Microscopías Avanzadas (LMA-ICTS).
